Why aren’t we investing in mental health?

Hi, I’m James and I’m one of the Voices of National Mind.

Your local authority is responsible for helping to prevent mental health problems from developing and promoting good mental health. But most are spending hardly anything on this – and some nothing at all.

This is unacceptable.

We’re calling for whoever forms the next government to develop a national plan to reduce the number of people becoming unwell.

It’s taken me a long time to understand that many things have an impact on my mental health.  I now know that things like going to yoga classes, visiting local parks and having a sense of belonging in the community have a positive impact on how I am feeling.

Most of these activities lie outside of the NHS and are provided by the local authority, but they are just as important as health care in keeping me from returning to the grips of a mental health problem. There’s good evidence that investment in prevention works, but only by acting together to raise awareness will we achieve change:

  • Write to your local paper – using our easy email template – to show them how much is being spent locally
  • Watch our film and share it with your friends and family to get people talking about wellbeing
  • If you follow us on Twitter or Facebook, share our ‘Preventing mental health problems’ illustration

Thank you, James Voice of Mind
