At Stockport Mind volunteers are involved in all areas of our work
and are vital to our service provision.
The supportive and friendly environment encourages personal development
and really values the time that volunteers give. Training
and Supervision at Mind
All volunteers must complete our Level I Mental Health Awareness
Training which is a three-part course and sessions run each month.
Level One training will enable volunteers to work in several areas
such as: Outreach, the Office, and as an Information assistant.
Please contact
Richard Wickison on 0161 480 7393 to book a place on the next
training course.
Additional training
is necessary for work in Advocacy:
- Advocacy
- There
is a free 10 session advocacy course run at Stockport Mind.
Please get in touch if you want to attend the next course.
Volunteering
Opportunities at Mind
ADVOCACY
The advocacy workers manage our advocacy service and work with a
limited number of volunteers to support service users both in the
community and on hospital wards. Volunteers enable people to access
their rights and can support with tribunals, consultations, clinics
and other practical issues.
FUNDRAISING
As a voluntary agency we are always looking to raise finance to
help us deliver and improve our programme of activities. Volunteers
can get involved in any area of fundraising, from rattling tins
to writing bids to grant making trusts. This type of volunteering
typically occurs outside of normal office hours.
INFORMATION ASSISTANTS
Volunteers work on our web site and help us to maintain our information
library. Volunteers also assist in promotion of community awareness
with regard to mental health issues. We have many volunteers who
contribute to our Newsletter by writing articles and editing the
bi-monthly publication.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES
For those who
wish to participate in group activities we run a busy Outreach programme
which involves trips such as: theatre, museum, meals out, ten pin
bowling, Zoo, Knowsley Safari Park, and current local events. Volunteer
drivers and supporters are essential for this valuable service to
operate effectively.
OFFICE VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers
who work in reception at Mind play a central role to the organisation.
All telephone calls go through reception and must be transferred
to the right employee. This relies heavily on well-trained volunteers
using positive communication skills to gather information sensitively
from people who are often very distressed. Such volunteers are the
first port of call for visitors as well as people on the telephone
and a positive response is essential.
What
happens next?
You will be asked to pop in to talk about volunteering. You will
be given a training manual, volunteer's newsletter and a list of
dates of future training sessions (a prerequisite to any form of
volunteering).
You will complete
an application form and provide two referees.
All volunteers are subject to checks with the Criminal Records Bureau.
