Statutory Community Care

The NHS and Social Services are required by law to provide certain types of care; these are known as statutory services. This chapter describes the statutory services that are available to help people with mental health problems live in the community. In mental health services Health and Social Services work in partnership to deliver mental health care. They have joint responsibility for caring, helping and treating people in the community. The majority of people with mental health problems are treated and supported in the community; hospital services are only for people with the most acute problems. Voluntary organisations such as Stockport Mind also provide services to enable people to live in the community but these are in addition to those which are provided by the statutory sector. For further details of community based services go to the ‘Places to go, activities’ chapter.
