Places to go / Activities
At first I was afraid – and that’s putting it mildly! For my initial interview and assessment at MAPS, I had to be escorted by car, virtually holding on to my Befriender. Like anything new, it was all scary, and I was so glad that the people I met were warm and welcoming. I was worried about the number of members who attend, and as a female, I was nervous about all the blokes attending! Trying to cope with agoraphobia and several years of depression, I battled my fears and began coming to regular sessions. Now, for me the best thing about MAPS is that yes, it IS a ‘mental health’ service, but it is not just a patronising drop-in centre full of cliques and long-time users who are unwelcoming – it is an understanding and friendly but very productive and enabling place. After several months here I am regaining confidence, have become a member’s representative, am involved in several of the arts sessions and have improved my social skills 1,000 %! I am not, and may never be fully recovered and ‘normal’ (whatever that is!) but I do have a quality of life that makes my life worth living now. I have done things I wouldn’t have believed possible, like write for an anthology, take part in theatre at Romiley Forum, attend an exhibition of artwork in Manchester and see our work on display! MAPS is the difference between existing (and wishing I didn’t) and actually living and finding some enjoyment in life. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I strongly recommend trying as many services as you can, and hope you find the right thing for you. Maria Kenny
