Advocacy

  What is an Advocate?

An advocate helps service users to speak out and express their views and encourages professionals to listen.

Who can access the Advocacy Service?

Anyone with a mental health problem, who lives in Stockport.

What does the Advocacy Service Cover?

Accessing information
Representation at ward rounds /outpatients appointments
Support in planning your care with professionals
Support in planning your discharge from hospital
Your rights under the Mental Health Act
Communicating with professionals in hospital and the community
Getting your views heard
Knowing your rights
Help to represent yourself in circumstances you find difficult
Support in making complaints

How much Information will you need about me?
Very minimal information – just enough to help us to understand your situation
and represent you.

What will happen if the Advocacy Service cannot help me?
If the issues you are dealing with are outside the areas the advocacy service can help with, the advocacy worker will help you find someone with the necessary skills to support you.
