Stockport Mind is an independent adult mental health charity that
offers friendly, accessible support and information to promote well-being
in the community.
We are affiliated to National Mind, one of the leading mental health
charities in England and Wales. The Stockport Mind organisation
was set up by a group of volunteers in 1971 and has grown to be
one of the largest Local Mind Associations in the North West.
We are run by
an Executive Committee, volunteers and paid staff. A proportion
of these people have had experience of the mental health services
as users.
Aims
- Provide flexible
services to meet individual needs
- Provide
a range of community services on top of those provided by the
Authorities
- Develop
close links with service users and campaign to improve services
- Promote
user involvement, consultation and participation in service design,
delivery and evaluation
- Raise
awareness
- Challenge

Our
priorities include:
- The promotion
of normalization, empowerment and choice for users
- Campaigning
for the rights of those marginalized by mental health needs
- Challenging
social exclusion and stigmatisation
- The on-going
development of our existing projects to better serve the needs
of users
- Providing
a range of skills–based volunteering opportunities for users
leading to training or employment
- The development
of support for adult survivors of sexual abuse
We have ensured
that service users have been represented on a number of key committees,
including the main Mental Health Services Joint Strategy Group and
a variety of sub groups. This will hopefully ensure that service-users
are involved in the future development of adult services in Stockport.
