Christmas support and mental health – 2019

Although Christmas is a time of celebration for many, for some of us it can be a difficult time of year.

Bereavement, debt, money issues, family circumstances and loneliness can weigh particularly heavy on our mental health during the festive period.

This year we are going to close for Christmas, so our phones will be off and we won’t be available at the office from midday on Tuesday 24 December, until we reopen with full service on Thursday 2 January 2020.

Below we have listed some places that you can contact if you need support or someone to talk to during a time of year when some services will be closed, as well as information on the availability of other Stockport organisations.

Samaritans – 116 123Open 24/7 throughout, if you’re distressed or feeling suicidal. You can also email jo@samaritans.org. Stockport Samaritans can offer limited face to face support at their Heaton Moor branch – please see their website for full details and opening hours for this service.

NHS – 999 / 111999 for emergencies, 111 for non-emergencies. You could check out the Christmas opening hours for your GP’s surgery in advance too, just so you have the information to hand.

Stockport User Friendly Fellowship and Man About A Dog will be available on Christmas Day, 12.30pm to 4.30pm, should anyone wish to go along for a quiet space and some company. This is hosted at Disability Stockport, 23 High Street, SK1 1EG.

The Wellspring – 0161 477 6344Providing services to homeless and disadvantaged people 365 days a year. Open 9am-2pm Christmas Day, and 9am-8pm on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.

SANELine – 0300 304 7000national out-of-hours mental health helpline offering specialist emotional support, guidance and information to anyone affected by mental illness, including family, friends and Carers. Open every day of the year, from 4.30pm to 10.30pm.

The Silver Line – 0808  4 70 80 90A free, confidential helpline for people who are feeling isolated, generally a service tailored towards older people. Open 24/7 throughout.

Drinkline – 0300 123 1110National alcohol helpline. If you’re worried about your own or someone else’s drinking, you can call this free helpline in complete confidence.

Disability Stockport – 0161 480 7248 – Close on 24 December and reopen 30 December.

Stockport Homes – 0161 217 6016 – Close lunch time 24 December, reopening 4 January.  Emergency repairs and homelessness services along with ASB can be reported as normal during this time.

Women’s Centre – 0161 355 4455 – Closed from 24 December to 2 January.

Arc – 0161 480 7731 – Closed from Friday 20 December to Monday 6 January, but have several free creative programmes starting in January, including the Ageing Well pottery programme for over 50s.

Christ With All Saints Church – 07875 774427Free Christmas dinner but there are only limited spaces. Please phone the above number or email janecawsey@hotmail.co.uk to enquire as to whether there are any spaces left. Christ With All Saints Church, All Saints Road, Heaton Norris, Stockport, SK4 1QA.

Zaynies – 07429 160939 – providing free meals on Christmas Day to those in need, and may be able to deliver Christmas dinner boxes if anyone requires. They will be open 12pm-3pm. Please phone to find out more. Their address is 508 Hempshaw Lane, SK2 5TL.

Home Instead Senior Care Stockport – 0161 480 0646 free festive lunch for Stockport seniors, Christmas Day 11.45am-2pm. This will be at Rose Walker Centre, Essex Avenue, SK3 0JA. Booking is essential, and transport is available for those that need it.
