This week is Carers Week 2018. This is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges Carers face and recognise their contribution to families and communities throughout the country.
Around 6.5 million people in the UK are Carers, looking after a parent, partner, child or friend.
Stockport Mind Carers Service
Here at Stockport Mind, we have a service for Carers. This service supports mental health Carers, who live in Stockport, around the emotional and practical support they provide to others (aged 18+) around their mental health.
We use the term Carer loosely as well – if you have an adult neighbour or friend who you’re supporting, you can still get input from our team as to how best to support them.
The service provide monthly drop-in groups, as well as tailored one-to-one support in person, over the phone and on emails, and they also provide statutory Carers Assessments.
Carers Week events
To celebrate this year’s event, our Carers Service organised a number of events to celebrate the week.
We had Laughter expert Robin Graham facilitate a laughter therapy session for our Carers, followed by Afternoon Tea at Robinson’s Brewery in Stockport.
Robin taught our Carers laughter techniques which reminded them of the importance of maintaining a sense of humour during times of stress, and being able to laugh at ourselves. He also spoke about the theory behind laughter therapy and how laughter is a natural endorphin for the body, which raises our energy levels.
The Afternoon Tea was a great chance for Carers to unwind and socialise over the brewery’s selection of cakes and sandwiches.
Carers we have supported for some time were able to chat with newer users of the Carers Service and it was lovely to see the community of Stockport’s mental health Carers growing in support of one another.
