The UK’s first Pre & Post Natal Depression Awareness Week launches today
The week aims to raise awareness of perinatal depression between 5th and 11th September 2016. The awareness week will also facilitate discussions around other pre and postnatal mental health problems that affect parents, such as, Postnatal OCD and Postnatal Psychosis. You can follow events using the Twitter hashtag #PNDAW16
Pandas Foundation believes that although mental health is generally spoken
about more than ever before, pre and postnatal mental health problems are left behind and in the dark. 1 in 10 women and 1 in 3 men battle with these mental health problems during parenthood. Pandas will use this week to put the spotlight on these problems, and get people talking about them more to break down stigma.
In addition to raising awareness to support those currently suffering, the week also intends to reach those who aren’t yet aware that how they are feeling is a mental health problem, meaning they can get support too.
Pandas are being supported by other organisations including The Care Quality Commission, Maternal Mental Health Alliance, Tommy’s, Mental Health Nurses Association and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
During the week, Pandas will feature tips and advice for people who experience perinatal mental health problems, as well as their family and friends. Blogs written by their supporters, volunteers and service users will also highlight personal experiences and self-care methods.
